Terms of Service

This page is unreviewed

This draft was written from the application’s source code to describe what it actually does. It has not been reviewed by a lawyer and should not be relied on as a final statement of the terms governing Epoch Voices until that review happens.

The gist

Epoch Voices is operated by Tresco Integrations LLC(“we,” “us”) and lets you have a real-time video conversation with a historical figure, grounded in a body of writing or source material specific to that figure. By using the site, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, don’t use the site.

We’ve made these terms available under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, adapted from Automattic’s. You’re welcome to reuse them for your own project — see the attribution at the foot of this page.

What you’re watching

Every figure on this site is an AI-generated performance, in two parts that are each synthetic: the face you see is a generated portrait, animated by software, and the voice you hear is synthesised speech. Neither is a recording of the person, living or dead — nothing on this site is footage or audio of anyone actually saying anything. It is not the person, and not endorsed, authorized, or reviewed by them or their estate. What the figure says is likewise a machine-generated approximation grounded in a historical or biographical account of that figure, with some degree of fictionalization inherent to any such portrayal — not a historical record, and not a statement attributable to the real person. Every gallery card states what a figure’s replies are grounded in; that sourcing is part of this representation, not incidental to it. Don’t rely on a figure’s replies for factual, medical, legal, financial, or any other professional purpose.

Source material and licensing

Each figure’s material is drawn from that person’s own writing, in the public domain in the United States — sourced from Project Gutenberg, Wikisource, the Internet Archive, or, in one case, scans supplied directly for this project and transcribed. We do not use biographies or third-party accounts written about a figure: every answer is grounded in words the figure actually wrote.

A small number of figures cannot meet that standard in full, and each says so on its own page. Some speak from the book or work in which they appear, including narration and other characters, not only their own lines. Some are grounded in OCR text from scanned period material, which carries the errors that implies. One figure holds only the surviving public-domain excerpts of his major works rather than the complete text, because no full English translation of them has yet entered the public domain.

Public-domain status in a text or image does not by itself clear a trademark in a name or likeness. Every figure is reviewed against this before being added, and a figure has been removed after publication when that review found a live trademark claim. No figure currently on the roster requires an individual trademark notice; this page will name one directly if that changes.

Using the service

You can use Epoch Voices without an account, subject to a limit of one conversation per day. Creating an account, via Clerk, replaces that with a monthly allowance of conversations, which resets at the start of each calendar month, UTC, and does not carry over. That monthly allowance was introduced in September 2026 and is smaller in total than the daily allowance free accounts had before it. See our Privacy Policy for what an account involves.

Using the site without a paid plan is free. Paid plans are available — see Membership and Pricing Information — and are billed as subscriptions through Clerk’s checkout. Our own systems never receive your card details; they learn only which plan you hold.

Plans, billing and cancellation

What each plan includes is set out on the Membership and Pricing Information page, and the price and any trial are shown again at checkout before you pay. Prices are in US dollars. We do not add tax or VAT at checkout; if any is due where you live, it is your responsibility.

Billing period and renewal

You choose monthly or annual billing at checkout. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period, at the price then shown for your plan, until you cancel. Annual plans renew annually, not monthly.

Changing plan

Moving to a more expensive plan takes effect immediately. Moving to a cheaper one takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for, so you keep what you bought until then rather than losing it on the day you change your mind.

Cancelling

You can cancel at any time from your account. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not end the period you have already paid for. You keep your plan until that period ends, and then return to the free tier. We do not delete your account when a plan ends — your conversations simply go back to the free allowance.

Refunds

We do not refund part-used periods as a matter of course, and cancelling does not automatically produce a refund. If something has gone wrong — you were charged twice, or charged for something you could not use — contact us and we will put it right. Refunds are issued through our payment processor rather than from this site.

If you are a consumer in the UK or EU, nothing here removes any statutory right of withdrawal you have. Where you have such a right and exercise it, we will honour it.

Free trials

A plan may offer a free trial; whether one applies, and for how long, is shown at checkout. A trial is available once per person. Eligibility is tied to your verified email address and survives deleting and recreating an account, so signing up again with the same address does not give you a second trial.

If you cancel during a trial you keep access until the trial’s original end date and are not charged. If you do not cancel, then at the end of the trial: if a payment method is on file, your subscription begins and it is charged; if none is on file, you return to the free tier and are not charged. You are emailed three days before a trial ends.

Switching to a different paid plan during a trial ends the trial at once: you are charged a full billing period of the new plan immediately, and no second trial is granted. If you want to try a plan, finish the trial before changing.

One limitation worth stating plainly, because it affects European cardholders in particular: our payment processing does not currently support 3-D Secure authentication. A renewal that your bank requires you to authenticate will fail rather than prompt you, and a failed trial conversion returns you to the free tier immediately rather than after a grace period.

What a plan actually meters

Paid plans replace the free conversation allowance with a monthly budget of conversation minutes. That budget resets at the start of each calendar month, UTC. Unused minutes do not carry over.

A conversation that begins while you still have minutes is allowed to run to the end of its session limit even if it crosses your remaining budget — we would rather overshoot slightly than cut you off mid-sentence. The next conversation waits for the budget to reset. If a subscription ends while a conversation is running, that conversation finishes; the next one follows the free allowance.

Price changes

We may change prices. A change never affects a period you have already paid for. We will give at least 30 days’ notice by email before a changed price applies to a renewal, so you can cancel first if you would rather not continue.

Institutional plans

An institutional plan is held by a school or institution, not by its pupils. The person who arranges it does so on the institution’s behalf, and the institution is responsible for how its pupils use the service, including the age arrangement set out under Minimum age. Institutional and enterprise access is arranged directly rather than bought through checkout, and is governed by whatever is agreed in writing for that arrangement, which takes precedence over this section where the two differ. Contact us to discuss it.

Minimum age

To create your own account on Epoch Voices you must be at least 16 years old. The same applies to using the site without an account. Sixteen is above the digital-consent age in every EU member state and above the US floor, so one rule serves every visitor.

Younger pupils use Epoch Voices only through a school or institution with Institutional access. Under that arrangement the institution holds the account and the relationship with us; it decides which of its pupils use the service and provides the lawful basis for their doing so; and pupils do not register for accounts of their own. By setting a class or group up on such a plan, the institution confirms it has the authority, or the consent it needs, to let those pupils use the service.

The product has no age-verification step, and we do not check an institution’s authority: both are stated requirements that we take on trust, not things we technically enforce or verify. If you are under 16 and not using the site through an institution, please do not use it.
